Caterina Carnevale
About
I’m currently studying Illustration and 2D Animation while also working as a freelance illustrator. I live and work in Rome.
I’ve always loved telling stories through drawing, whether through illustration or comics. That’s why my lessons can also focus on visual storytelling and artistic communication, in addition to drawing techniques.
I believe, in fact, drawing is more than a technique: it's a language, a way to express things that words sometimes cannot. My favorite part of teaching is helping others find their own voice through illustration and animation, whether it's a quiet whisper or a bold shout.
Outside the classroom, you'll often find me playing my ukulele, walking through natural parks or closed up in a cinema. These passions deeply influence my creative work, shaping the narratives and the drawing I bring to life.
If you have a story to tell or you wanna learn having one, I'd love to draw that journey with you.
Teaching Style
I began teaching at the age of seventeen, and since then I’ve gained experience with both adults and children, including students with special educational needs.
Talent doesn’t matter. Natural predisposition doesn’t exist.
Drawing is a skill you can learn at any age. If you want to give shape to your ideas, you’re in the right place.
My goal is to help each person develop their own expressive abilities, offering them the tools they need to grow confidently.
Each lesson is tailored to the student and shaped by the connection we build together. We can focus on the fundamentals — like anatomy, shading, and perspective — or take a more expressive, storytelling-driven approach through comics and illustration.
My lessons are open to people of all ages and learning styles, including those with special needs.
Learning to draw means learning to understand yourself and the world around you.
Curriculum
My teaching method is deeply student-centred. I believe that each person who chooses to draw is moved by a unique intention, whether it's mastering technical skills or exploring their own world through visual storytelling. That's why I tailor every lesson to support the individual goals of each student.
For those who are more interested in improving their technical abilities, i provide structured, didactic materials. These include selected resources from established drawing manuals, as well as my own handouts and exercises focused on essential techniques such as anatomy, perspective, shading, the use of different tools and materials and much more. My aim is to make complex topics accessible and rewarding to learn.
For students who are more interested in self-expression and storytelling, we work with creative expression exercises. These activities are more emotional and intuitive, designed to help students put themselves into their art, exploring their own identity, style and imagination.
In all cases, I foster a safe and inspiring space where students can grow at their own rhytm, not following a one-size path.
Student recommendations
Tea's mother (10 yo)
"My daughter Tea started taking drawing lessons when she was eight. From the very first lesson, I could see how much they were connecting, which is also very important to me since Tea is a very shy child. Caterina was able to create an environment where Tea could feel free to express herself without feeling the pressure of not being "good enough". Not only they work on fun and imaginative exercises like creating her own characters and bringing them to life through drawings, but they also found a way to connect art to Tea's personal passions. For example, Tea loves board games and together they customized some of her favorite games, redesigning them with new themes and characters. They even created little hand-made pieces based on Tea's friends, so now when they come over they can all play a version of the game where they are a direct part of it! It made her feel proud and empowered. I can't recommend Caterina as a teacher enough!"
Virginia (52 yo)
"I work as a full-time secretary, but I've always carried this quiet love for drawing with me. For years I only ever copied existing images and I thought that was the only way I could draw. Taking lessons with Caterina has changed everything: through her gentle guidance and expressive exercises, I discovered that I didn't need to rely on someone else's work to create something meaningful. I learned that I do have something to tell and that I can invent everything I want. She gave me the tools and the tools to explore my visual language and thanks to her I feel more connected to myself than ever."
Armando (34 yo)
"I had a project in my mind about customizing guitars but I didn't know where to start to learn how to do that. With Caterina, each lesson has helped me making real measurable progress, both in technical drawing and research of materials and tools. I finally understood concepts like perspective and dynamic anatomy that had always felt too complex to me. She's organized, insightful and always ready to answer questions. She puts her heart and soul in her student's growth and this goes way beyond the weekly hour of lesson we have. During the week, in fact, she always sent me new stuff that she thought could be useful for me. Highly recommend if you want to truly grow as an artist."
