Chris Young
About
Hi, my name’s Chris and I have been playing guitar for 40 years and teaching since I was in high school. I majored in guitar in college and have taught guitar at the university and high school levels as well as privately to students from age 7 to 70. I teach everything from classical, blues, rock and jazz and customize my lessons to various levels and learning styles. I do my best to keep my students enthusiastic about by helping them play music they like from the very beginning.
Teaching Style
I like to incorporate a variety of songs from different styles such as pop, rock, folk, classical, bossa nova, blues and jazz. I have lots of experience teaching both beginners and more advanced players. When time allows, I like to incorporate some music reading, ear training and music theory in lessons.
“Chris Young is an outstanding talent both in his expertise of the guitar and his ability to teach. His one on one interaction is relaxed, yet he is able to convey his skill set of guitar teaching so that it is easily mastered by the student. Add to that his ability to play just about any instrument, and no one should be disappointed. I went from guitar wanna be to guitar hero in my first band thanks to Chris! He's fabulous!” - James L.
“Chris was hired by our family several years ago to teach our two teenage sons to play guitar... His musical talent and knowledge along with his focus, maturity, creativeness and personality allows his students to receive his lessons with enthusiasm and retention." - Nancy C. (parent)
“Chris is an amazing musician and also an incredibly talented teacher. He is patient and kind and works to your level – simplifying things if that is what you need or making things ever more challenging. He has the ability to make learning fun while also making sure his students have the foundation they need to meet their musical goals. I highly recommend him as a teacher.” –Rebecca L.
Curriculum
With beginners we typically start with simple melodies and the basic chords and move into strumming and more chords as strength is built. We also do simple music reading.
With intermediate to advanced players we often work on soloing by learning famous guitar solos or look at ways to apply fretboard mechanics and music theory to improvising on the guitar.
My teaching philosophy is to find what really motivates my students to play and approach the lessons from that perspective - making things challenging enough to improve but always fun!
