Abner Cabrera
About
José Abner Cabrera Álvarez (Abner Cabrera) is a bassist, audio engineer, and producer from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He is a graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music, where he studied Music Production & Engineering, Contemporary Writing and Production, and completed a minor in Post-Production as a full-tuition scholarship recipient. During his time at Berklee, he developed strong skills in composition, arranging, and production across a wide range of styles, including Pop, Latin, Jazz, and Orchestral music.
Abner also studied at the National Conservatory of Music of the Dominican Republic, focusing on jazz performance, composition, and folkloric music. Prior to fully dedicating himself to music, he earned a degree in Computer Science Engineering, which he pursued in parallel with his musical career until 2017—an experience that continues to inform his technical and analytical approach to audio and production.
As a performer, Abner has shared the stage at jazz festivals and diverse live performances with artists such as Javier Vargas, Sheila del Bosque, Zahili G. Zamora, Zayra Pola, Aníbal Cruz, Estefanía Núñez, Letón Pe, Esteban Puebla, Sandy Gabriel, and many others.
Teaching Style
After years of studying music at the conservatory and college level, I realized that every student learns differently. What worked for me doesn’t always work the same way for my students. Because of this, I design one-on-one lessons tailored to each student’s goals, interests, and learning style.
My lessons focus on what the student wants to learn right now, while also building the core fundamentals needed to become a well-rounded, professional-level bassist. There’s no shortcut around practice, solid technique, understanding harmony, and even a bit of electronics to truly shape a great tone—but these skills are best learned while working on music that feels exciting and meaningful to you.
My goal is to help you grow as a bassist while keeping the learning process engaging, practical, and inspiring.
Each lesson includes a component to improve technique, musicianship and work in some sort of repertoire to apply the concepts learned in class.
