About

Hello! I’m Tiago – A Classical Guitarist from the Heart of Brazil

I am a professional guitarist and currently a Master's Degree student in Music Performance at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), one of Brazil's most prestigious institutions.

I am a professional classical guitarist and currently a Master's Degree student in Music Performance at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Brazil. My research and performance focus on the works of Weiss, Piazzolla, and Brouwer, alongside the rich tradition of Brazilian music.

I hold a Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Guitar and study under the guidance of the renowned professor Paulo Inda. Attended an 5 months program at Trinity Laban Conservatoire in London, studying with another renowned guitarist Graham Anthony Devine. Being based in Southern Brazil, I live and breathe the authentic culture of Samba, Bossa Nova, and Choro. My career combines the academic rigor of the conservatory with the spontaneous, rhythmic soul of popular music. I am fluent in English, Portuguese, and can communicate in Spanish.

Teaching Style

My teaching style is patient, encouraging, and highly personalized. I do not believe in a "one-size-fits-all" approach. Whether you are an amateur playing for relaxation or a serious student preparing for university auditions, I adapt to your pace.

Key features of my lessons:

  • Authenticity: When teaching Brazilian music, I focus on the "Levadas" (grooves) — the specific right-hand rhythmic nuances that you cannot learn just by reading sheet music.

  • Health & Ergonomics: As a researcher, I pay close attention to posture and hand relaxation to ensure you play pain-free and avoid injuries (tendonitis).

  • Tone Quality: We will work constantly on sound production to make your guitar sing.

Curriculum

My method blends the modern classical guitar school (focusing on mechanics and efficiency) with practical music theory. I believe you should understand what you are playing, unlocking the fretboard through the study of intervals and harmony.

Materials & Texts I provide custom PDF materials and exercises for my students, but I also frequently use standard repertoire books depending on the student's level and interest:

  • For Technique: Pumping Nylon (Scott Tennant), Abel Carlevaro's Serie Didactica, and Giuliani's 120 Right Hand Studies.

  • For Classical Repertoire: Julio Sagreras Guitar Lessons, Matteo Carcassi (Op. 60), and Leo Brouwer (Etudes Simples).

  • For Brazilian Music: The Brazilian Guitar Book (Nelson Faria), Marco Pereira's Rhythms, and arrangements of works by Villa-Lobos, Jobim, Baden Powell, and Garoto.

You do not need to buy these books immediately; I will guide you on what is necessary for our journey.
