Curriculum

Teaching Method

My teaching approach is student-centered and practical, combining jazz theory with real musical application. Lessons are tailored to each student’s goals, level, and musical interests—whether that’s learning standards, improving improvisation, understanding harmony, or developing strong time feel and phrasing.

I focus on:

  • Learning jazz through songs and standards

  • Connecting theory directly to the fretboard

  • Developing improvisation through ear training, transcription, and guided exercises

  • Building solid rhythm, comping skills, and chord vocabulary

  • Encouraging creative expression while maintaining strong fundamentals

Students are given clear practice strategies and materials after each lesson so they can make steady progress between sessions.

Recommended materials depend on the student’s level, but may include:

  • The Real Book (C edition)

  • Jazz Guitar Harmony – Ted Greene

  • Time For The Future, Polyrhythm In Harmony - Brett Willmott

  • Book of Harmony Theory And Voicing - Brett Willmott

  • A Modern Method for Guitar – William Leavitt

  • Transcriptions of recordings by artists such as Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Jim Hall, and Grant Green

I also provide custom exercises, PDFs, backing tracks, and listening assignments tailored to each student.
