Yannik Zimmermann
About
Hi, I’m Yannik.
I teach narrative, ear-driven composition for EDM producers, film & game composers, and pianists.
My work focuses on atmosphere, emotional expression and musical storytelling. Instead of starting from rules or theory systems, we work from listening, intuition and impact – developing a personal musical language that feels authentic and expressive.
I have over 15 years of experience in composing, 22 years at the piano, and a background in pedagogy (M.A.). Alongside my own compositional work, I have extensive experience in teaching and mentoring learners from different backgrounds.
My goal is not to teach a style – but to help you understand how your music works emotionally, and how to shape it with intention.
Teaching Style
My teaching is ear-driven, practice-based and reflective.
Sessions usually start from listening and musical intention, not from predefined theory concepts. We work directly with your own material or short compositional sketches, exploring questions like:
- What is this music trying to express?
- Where does tension build – and where does it release?
- How does this sound affect the listener emotionally?
Theory may appear as a descriptive tool, but never as a rule set to follow. The focus is on developing awareness, musical intuition and a sense for narrative flow.
Lessons are dialog-based and exploratory, aiming to help you build confidence in your own musical decisions.
This approach is especially suited for:
- composers and producers who work intuitively but want more clarity and direction
- EDM producers who want to move beyond loops and create musically evolving structures
- pianists who want to start composing or deepen their own musical language
- film and game composers interested in atmosphere, emotion and storytelling
It may be less suitable for students who are looking for a strict theory curriculum or a rule-based approach to composition.
Curriculum
Instead of fixed textbooks, students are encouraged to work with:
- their own musical sketches
- selected reference tracks or soundtracks
- focused listening exercises tailored to their goals
When helpful, short listening or reflection tasks may be suggested between sessions.
