Chaitanya Natu
About
I am a professional tabla player and percussionist with a strong foundation in Indian classical music and global rhythmic traditions. I began studying tabla at the age of six and have completed a Master of Music in Tabla, later expanding my musical language at Berklee College of Music.
My performance work spans Indian classical concerts, fusion ensembles, film scoring, and cross-cultural collaborations across India and Spain. Alongside performing, I am deeply committed to pedagogy and structured rhythm training.
Teaching Style
My teaching style is disciplined, clear, and tradition-rooted. I emphasize strong fundamentals in tabla - correct hand technique, tonal clarity, and precise articulation of bols - while ensuring that students truly internalize rhythm rather than mechanically reproduce patterns.
Lessons are structured yet adaptable. I guide students step-by-step through the tala system, developing cycle awareness, phrasing, and improvisational confidence. Recitation (padhant) is central to the process, as rhythm must first be understood vocally before it is expressed on the instrument.
While the focus is tabla, the training strengthens rhythmic intelligence that applies to any instrument. Students develop timing, listening skills, and structural awareness that enhance their overall musicianship.
The objective is not only to play compositions, but to think rhythmically and perform with clarity, balance, and depth.
Curriculum
My teaching is rooted in Indian classical tabla training, with strong emphasis on tone, technique, and clarity of bols. Students develop a deep understanding of the tala system, including cycle awareness, phrasing, and improvisation.
Beyond learning repertoire, I focus on building internal rhythm - so students can apply these principles to any instrument they play. Through recitation (padhant), structured exercises, and progressive compositions, students strengthen timing, precision, and musical sensitivity.
Whether studying tabla seriously or seeking to improve rhythmic control on another instrument, the goal is the same: strong foundation, disciplined practice, and confident musical expression.
