Katherine Saul
About
Hi! I’m Katherine, but most people call me Kat. I’m a Nashville-born vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter. Helping people find their voice is one of my favorite parts of making music.
Growing up in Nashville meant being surrounded by incredible musicians and storytellers. I was lucky to learn the craft at an early age. This led to attending Belmont University on a dual Vocal and Academic Scholarship, and touring/writing professionally during my time there (also graduating early with honors! the parents were proud!).
Since then, my work as a vocalist and songwriter has taken me between Nashville and Los Angeles, performing on stages ranging from intimate rooms like Soho House Nashville & NYC, to Exit/IN, to headlining a stage at the Sundance Film Festival two years in a row. I’ve been lucky to see my songs as an artist and songwriter kiss the charts, see a win at the International Songwriting Competition, and find homes in film/tv.
Alongside my work in my newest artist project (releasing music under the name Herine), I love teaching voice and songwriting to people who are passionate about their craft. I want to give back the same excitement and education that was given to me, as a kid growing up around the industry!
In our lessons, we focus on building a strong, healthy vocal foundation while also exploring creativity and songwriting. Some students come to me because they want to feel more confident singing. Others are developing their artistry or dreaming about a career in music. Wherever you are starting from, my goal is to help you grow your skills, trust your instincts, and discover what makes your voice and your stories unique.
All lessons are online, as I travel for vocal and songwriting work. This is great, because we can both work together from anywhere!
If you’re excited about music and ready to grow, I’d love to work with you.
Teaching Style
As a working vocalist, producer, and songwriter in Nashville, I treat lessons as hands-on sessions. My teaching style is to elevate and bring out the best in the artist (you!). That means a bit of technique, of course, but also helping you identify and develop the most unique parts of your singing and writing voice. Let's set you up for long term success, celebrate the small wins, and have fun doing it!
Curriculum
Ever heard the phrase, "Squeaky wheel gets the oil"? The greatest artists of our time possess a quality that sticks out or differs from the status quo. That said, I don't want my students to be perfect. I want them to be AWESOME.
My method is inspired by Picasso's famous quote: "learn the rules to break them". There are some great texts which can give you a head start on the proverbial "rules" and tools. "Writing Better Lyrics" by Pat Pattison and Andrew Byrne's "The Singing Athlete" provide excellent framework for the ideas we will explore together.
