About

My name is Ernesto Mercado — jazz guitarist, producer, arranger, and music educator based in Guadalajara, México, with over 20 years of professional experience.

Throughout my career I've performed, recorded, and worked as musical director with artists connected to Luis Miguel, Maná, and Alejandro Sanz. I've led jazz and composition departments at institutions including Fermatta Music Academy and Universidad Libre de Música, and I continue to perform internationally as a leader and sideman.

What I specialize in:

I work with intermediate and advanced guitarists who want to go beyond technique — students who want to understand harmony, develop a real improvisational vocabulary, and think like composers. My core areas are:

  • Jazz harmony and functional theory
  • Improvisation and melodic development
  • Composition and arrangement for guitar
  • Jazz-funk and contemporary styles

Who this is for:

If you've been playing for a while but feel stuck — if you can execute but can't yet hear what you're doing — this is where that changes. I work best with motivated students who are serious about musical growth, not just learning songs.

Teaching Style

My teaching is built around three things: clarity, context, and application.

Music theory without context is just memorization. I teach harmony and improvisation the way musicians actually use them — connected to real repertoire, real musical situations, and your specific goals as a player.

How lessons work:

Every student starts with a diagnostic conversation. Before we touch a single scale or chord, I want to know where you are, where you want to go, and what's been getting in the way. From there we build a structured path — not a random sequence of topics, but a logical progression designed around your musical goals.

What you can expect:

  • Lessons grounded in jazz tradition but applicable to contemporary styles
  • Clear explanations of why things work, not just what to play
  • Honest, direct feedback — I'll tell you exactly what needs work and how to fix it
  • A patient but demanding approach: I respect your time and expect you to respect the process

My students don't just learn to play. They learn to hear, think, and create like musicians.
