Xenia Winter
About
Hi! I’m Xenia, a pianist and private piano teacher who has been playing piano since the age of six. I studied Music Education at Herkimer College in Herkimer, New York, from 2009 to 2010. I then studied Music Performance at Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York, from 2010 to 2012. During my college studies, I developed my skills through music coursework as well as performances and recitals.
I began teaching piano in 2019 and have taught private lessons through my home studio in Colbert, Washington, ever since. I work with children, teens, and adults from beginner through intermediate levels, both in person and online.
Every student learns differently, so I personalize my lessons rather than using exactly the same approach with everyone. We work on note reading, rhythm, technique, music theory, and repertoire while building a strong musical foundation step by step.
One of my biggest goals as a teacher is to help students truly understand music rather than simply memorize songs. I want my students to become comfortable reading music, recognize patterns, understand what they are playing, and gradually become more confident and independent at the piano.
For younger students, I believe lessons should be encouraging and engaging while still providing structure and meaningful progress. For adults, whether you are touching a piano for the first time or returning after many years away, we will work at a comfortable pace and focus on the music and goals that matter to you.
My online lessons are private, one-on-one, and personalized to each student. Whether you want to build a strong foundation, become a more confident music reader, improve your technique, or simply enjoy playing the piano, I would love to help you reach your goals.
Teaching Style
My teaching style is patient, encouraging, and structured, while still being flexible to the needs of each student. I believe students make the best progress when they feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and learning at a pace that challenges them without becoming overwhelming.
I focus on building strong fundamentals from the beginning, including note reading, rhythm, technique, and musical understanding. Rather than simply showing students which keys to press, I help them understand what they are seeing in the music and why it works. As students progress, I encourage them to become more independent and confident in reading and learning new music.
With younger students, I keep lessons engaging and positive while maintaining clear expectations and steady progress. With teens and adults, I adapt lessons around their experience, interests, and personal goals. I want each student to leave a lesson knowing what they accomplished, what to work on next, and feeling encouraged about their progress.
Curriculum
I tailor the method and materials I use to each student's age, level, learning style, and goals. For beginning and developing students, two of my go-to methods are Faber Piano Adventures and John Thompson's piano course. I also supplement method books with additional repertoire, technique, theory, and sight-reading materials as appropriate.
During lessons, we work step by step on reading music, rhythm, fingering, technique, and musical expression. I encourage students to understand new concepts and apply them independently rather than relying only on demonstration or memorization.
As students progress, I introduce additional music based on their ability and interests so that lessons provide both a strong musical foundation and music they can enjoy learning.
