Spinning Classes with Expert Teachers

TJ King—a.k.a., the Peahen—is a spinner, writer and teacher with nearly 20 years’ experience in helping others find joy in fiber arts. While her passion is supported spinning, she also weaves, knits, felts and crochets. She’s looking forward to sharing her knowledge at the Cedar Springs Fiber Arts Center in the coming years.

Jill Duarte spends their days geeking out about all things fiber, diving into the nuances of fiber preparation, color, and the act of spinning. As co-owner of HipStrings, Jill is dedicated to the resurgence of modern craft that is based on a foundation of technical and historical knowledge. This approach is reflected in the fiber, yarn and tools they’ve developed and produce.

Laurie lives and works at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. As a child she was fascinated by all things fiber, particularly when visiting Colonial Williamsburg. She learned to spin first, on a spinning wheel built by her grandfather. Spinners hang out with weavers and spinning became the entry drug as she developed her fiber habit.

Julie has been raising fiber animals since her teens, first on her family farm and now at her own ranch. Building on her love for teaching and design, her college studies focused on secondary education and costume design. After school , raising fiber animals naturally led to spinning and weaving and then into instructing across the country.

Esther Rodgers is a full- time fiber artist from Mebane, NC. She is known for her creative art yarns and her unique fiber preparation, while constantly innovating her spinning techniques to create new textures. She is on the cutting edge in terms of yarn design. She loves to design and spin concept yarns from an inspiration and tell stories with her yarns.

Daryl Lancaster, a hand-weaver and fiber artist known for her award-winning hand-woven fabric and garments, has been constructing garments for more than half a century. She gives lectures and workshops to guilds, conferences, and craft centers all over the United States. Alanna Wilcox helps spinners, dyers, and fiber art enthusiasts achieve their creative goals through expert instruction via books and online workshops. Jillian Moreno, author of Yarnitecture: A Knitter’s Guide to Spinning: Building Exactly the Yarn You Want, can’t stop writing and teaching about spinning and using handspun to knit, weave and stitch. She explores, questions and plays and wants to take as many people as possible along for the ride.

Martha Owen is an artisan/shepherd and resident artist at the John C Campbell Folkschool (www.folkschool.org) in Brasstown, NC. She oversees classes in spinning/knitting,crochet/feltmaking /surface design and dyeing. Her adventure in spinning began here in 1978.

I am inspired by words, particularly the sound of the human voice and the person behind it.Language through handwriting and the forming of letters in different cultures – ultimately the universal concept of breath forming a line through writing, painting and speech.
