Can Anyone Learn to Sing?

We asked Lessonface’s Singing Teacher of the Year Aubrey Lauren  the age-old question, “Can anyone learn to sing?”

Aubrey has a well-proven approach with beginner singers, and as an online vocal coach she helps all levels of vocalists build confidence in their voices. Check out the video to see her response, or read on.

“Oh, absolutely. As people have come to me later in life, they were told at one point you can't sing, so you shouldn't. And that sticks with them. And then as a result, they don't practice because they're nervous. Then, the next time they try to sing, they get up there and all of a sudden they aren't sounding as good as they want. They pull away, and you create this vicious cycle of, 'I don't know if I sound that great.'

'I don't want to practice because I'm embarrassed. But then I sing, and I don't sound that great. Then, I don't want to practice and I'm embarrassed,' and you end up with a voice that might not have as much confidence as it could have if it was given a little bit of extra love at the beginning.

"The other part that's really important is when we think about singing, sometimes it's easy to forget that it's an instrument just like a piano or a violin. And I think we would all kind of laugh if we thought, 'Oh, we can just start playing sonatas on the piano with absolutely no problem, no practice whatsoever.' It's just skill.

"But in reality, the voice is just like everything else in the sense that it does take time, and probably the amount of time that you need in order to master the basics of the piano is what you're gonna need for the voice as well.”
