Meet 2025 Teacher of the Year for Brazilian Portuguese Monica Fischer

We asked 2025 Lessonface Teacher of the Year in Brazilian Portuguese, Monica Fischer, to share insights into her connection to the language and her approach to teaching. In this Q&A, Monica reflects on her passion for sharing Brazilian culture alongside language learning, and how she structures her virtual classroom to create a clear, goal-oriented, and engaging experience. She emphasizes patience, consistent practice, and enjoying the learning journey itself, while equipping students with the tools and resources to succeed and feel confident in Brazilian Portuguese.

If you could gift your students one piece of automatic knowledge or ability about Brazilian Portuguese, what would it be? 

I really like sharing Brazilian culture as well as knowing that I am helping share the language and increase the number of Portuguese speakers in the world. I believe Brazilian Portuguese is a popular language due to the fascination people have about the whole Brazilian culture. 

How would you describe your teaching studio?

It is a simple setup, with a desk, a book shelf, and accessories that make it easier to teach such as a computer and a camera.

If you could gift your students one piece of automatic knowledge or ability about Brazilian Portuguese, what would it be? 

Keep focusing on the goal and enjoy the journey! 

What are some of your most indispensable pieces of gear?

A computer, a desk, and a comfortable chair. Ergonomics are fundamental! It is great if students have a laptop and a good network connection, but this should not be something that would keep them from learning. Interactive presentations apps, voice recording apps, and whiteboard apps are some of the most useful for me in my virtual classroom. I’m hoping 2026 will bring even more students who are interested in achieve their language learning goals! 

What’s a skill or idea you’re excited to explore in 2026?

I want to explore even more resources for my virtual classroom. I always set a goal with my students initially, it is good to have one to guide them through the whole process.
