Meet 2025 Teacher of the Year for Native American Flute Ami Sarasvati

We asked 2025 Lessonface Teacher of the Year in Native American Style Flute, Ami Sarasvati, to share her perspective on teaching and musical growth. In this Q&A, Ami reflects on the intention she brings to each lesson, the thoughtfully designed studio space that supports her work, and her emphasis on slow, mindful practice. She highlights tone, ceremonial playing, and discovering one’s unique “heartsong” as central to building a meaningful, grounded relationship with the Native American Style flute.

What do you love about teaching the Native American Style Flute?

Students come from all over the world because they're drawn to the beautiful voice of the instrument. I am here to be a valued teacher in every lesson and get them to where they want to go. One lesson, one student at a time, focused on their goal.

How would you describe your teaching studio?

I have a dedicated room in my house for my studio, so I feel I'm really at work and in my element when I teach. My space is carefully thought out and I feel it supports my transition from home life to professional life even though it is just in another room in my home.

If you could gift your students one piece of automatic knowledge or ability about the Native American Style Flute, what would it be?

Practice very slowly. Speed will come. Focus on the beautiful tone.

Are there apps / texts / other resources you often recommend?

PanoTune is free and helpful. My new book and training on Ceremonial Playing will be launched in early 2026.

Do you have guidance for goal-setting for Native American Style flute students, or generally?

Ceremonial playing for sure. Students are getting a lot out of the material in all the books. Lots of progress with my students this year. Goal setting is important. Even just recording yourself so you can hear yourself is very helpful.

Is there anything else you would like to share with potential students about the Native American Style flute?

Discover your heartsong. It is unique and beautiful.
