I’ve been immersed in music my entire life, beginning with piano and trumpet before discovering my passion for stringed instruments in high school. I picked up guitar, joined the orchestra on viola, and dove deep into music theory taking both regular and A.P. Music Theory. In college, I fell in love with the mandolin, which has since become my primary instrument.

Skully Lawrence is a native of Sierra Vista, AZ and moved to Norwich, England at age 21 to play with an American childhood friend and 3 British lads in a band named “Allied Forces”. After much touring and efforts to launch the band he returned to Phoenix, AZ. Within a couple of years he joined up with Lurch Killz (original bass player for Sacred Reich).

I have been playing and teaching stringed instruments including mandolin for the past forty years. I taught individual lessons at East Tennessee State University in the Bluegrass, Old Time and Country Music department as well as group lessons in an after school program for many years.

I was hired as one of the youngest teachers at the National Guitar Workshop after completing their 3 year pedagogy program. I have a BA from Brown University. My best progress in my own 45 year+ musical journey has in fact come from private teachers, the most important one being Bill Connors, who played with Chick Corea.
