Play by Ear Session 3 – Playing in Different Keys and Modes
About Play by Ear Session 3 – Playing in Different Keys and Modes
As you start to feel more confident, our tunes will move into more keys and more challenging rhythms. We will continue the key of D and add G, A and Em and you will start to pick out more songs by ear, lead songs in jam sessions and play more of your previously learned tunes by memory. These tunes will continue to help you recognize different modes, Ionian, Mixolydian, Aeolian and Dorian by sound and how to use the capo to easily play each of these. Moving the start of the scale extends your knowledge of your dulcimer and helps you to be more aware of the possibilities of playing tunes you hear and want to play. Once again, audio and video support is provided as well as PDFs upon completion of the course. This course really moves you into an intermediate player.

I have been a music educator for more than four decades, teaching all levels from cradle to “almost grave!” My primary teaching on Lessonface is the mountain dulcimer and lever (Celtic style) harp. Since I participate in traditional music playing on both instruments I like to teach by ear but can provide music since I am a classical musician by trade.
