About Beginning Mandolin

Learn chords, scales, picking/strumming technique, and a selection of popular fiddle tunes played in acoustic jams globally. Covering one song per session we will begin with the tune Angeline the Baker in D, focus our second session on the tune Cluck Old Hen in the key of A, and focus our third session on Amazing Grace for technique in strumming and picking in 3/4 time and building skills in tremolo, and complete the series with the tune Billy in the Lowground in the key of C.

The capacity for this class is 12 students.

Class Goals

•Learn open chords and alternate larger chords and build skills in switching between shapes.
•Learn scales and picking technique and exercises for building muscle memory in alternate picking technique.
• Learn 3 popular tunes to apply chords, scales, strumming, and picking technique while building a tune repertoire.
• Learn skills in playing music with others towards joining our local community fiddle tune jams.

Tara Shupe was raised playing traditional American Fiddle Music and Bluegrass. She began playing festival stages at 6 years old and toured the US and Europe playing mandolin and singing with the award winning youth bluegrass band String Fever starting in her teens, taking the stages of Telluride, Rockygrass, La Roche Festival in France, GreyFox, IBMA, and more.
