About Creating a Rainbow of Color from Natural Dyes with Shelagh Jessop

Learn how to create a rainbow of natural color on fiber using only plant, insect, and mineral dyes. In this two-day course, instructor and professional natural dyer Shelagh Jessop will introduce students to the ancient art of natural dyeing. This workshop will include some lectures and a lot of hands-on learning. Students will go home with fabric and yarn in a rainbow of natural colors.


Materials, Equipment, and Supplies the Student Must Bring to Class

Clothes and shoes they can get very messy in, plastic gloves (dishwashing gloves), and an apron.


Materials Fee (to be paid directly to the instructor)

$95 - includes all fiber/yarn, linen fabric, natural dyes and mordants

This live in-person seminar will meet on Wednesday and Thursday, April 29 and 30th, from 9am to 4pm with a one hour lunch break, for a total of 12 hours of instruction.

Shelagh Jessop

    Shelagh Jessop is the one-woman-show behind Stuart Moores Textiles, which is named after her great-grandfather. Shelagh is a textile artist and professional natural dyer, specializing in traditional natural dyes and historically accurate dye techniques. Her work is predominantly inspired by the history of textile arts and crafts, from grand tapestries made by 11th century master artisans to hand stitched home goods made by 18th century homemakers. Shelagh has a degree in Textile Design and a two-year certificate in Horticulture. She currently works out of her home-studio along the Potomac River in Maryland.
