Knitting the Sock with the Perfect Fit! with Kimberly Langley

About Knitting the Sock with the Perfect Fit! with Kimberly Langley

Socks are popular knits for all the obvious reasons: takes one skein of yarn, small project, a (relatively) quick knit and the perfect size to carry around and knit on the go. Knitting socks is also practical; socks keep your feet warm. A well fitted hand-knit sock is sublime. Once you experience the perfectly fitted sock, a sock that slides over your foot, fitting like a second skin, but soft and warm, you will never wear commercially sized socks again.
How do you obtain the perfectly fitted sock? Simple, know what to measure, where to measure and how to turn those measurements into the number of stitches to cast on. All students will learn to accurately measure and record the measurements of their own foot. Students will learn the formula to apply foot measurements and swatch gauge to determine the number of stitches to cast on and how to turn that number into the recipe for a perfectly fitting sock. Using worsted weight yarn, we will review techniques (heel flap, heel turn, etc.) on a mini sock.

Please note that this class runs from 9:30am to 12:30pm.

Pre-class Homework

Homework 1: Knit a swatch in stockinette and bind off. I recommend using a sock yarn (fingering weight) and a needle size between 1.75mm and 2.5mm. The swatch should have a horizontal measurement of 5 inches and a vertical measurement of 5 inches. Wash the swatch following the care instructions on the yarn label. It is important that the swatch is washed in the same manner as you will wash the finished socks.
Homework 2: Using worsted weight yarn and appropriate needles, cast on 32 stitches, being careful not to twist, join to knit in the round. Work 10 rounds of K2, P2 ribbing. Leaving work on needles, bring to class.

Kimberly Langley

Kim Langley founded YarnStory, an LYS in Honolulu, where she taught hundreds of people to knit and introduced many to the joy of hand knit socks. Currently based in Wisconsin, she developed a fascination with sheep breeds and works with local shepherds and woolen mills to create breed specific yarns; view the results at www.purveyoroffineyarns.com. Kim has been spreading her fascination with short rows, sheep breeds, and socks by teaching at fiber festivals across the Midwest (Shepherd’s Harvest, Wisconsin Sheep & Wool and others). You will find her wearing a much worn, much mended sweater and brightly colored hand knit socks.
