Secrets of Substitution with Amy Snell

About Secrets of Substitution with Amy Snell

There are so many things to consider when substituting yarns: grist, fiber characteristics, ply structure, and more. In this workshop we'll learn the best ways to identify a yarn's attributes, explore the importance of each, and explore specific substitution tools. We'll learn the importance of grist and how to calculate it; we'll demystify wpi. We'll learn how to find the closest match and when we need it and explore scenarios when we want to change something about the yarn and how to make the most educated choices so we can find the match we're looking for.

Materials, Equipment, and Supplies the Student Must Bring to Class

Please bring a skein of yarn for exploring, including its ball band, and needles suitable for knitting with that yarn. For a second yarn that you would like to substitute for, either bring the yarn with its ball band or bring a list of its complete characteristics: listed yarn weight category (i.e., DK, bulky, etc.); fiber content including percentages; number of yards or meters and ounces or grams per skein; wpi suggested row and stitch gauge and needles; number of plies and ply structure if you know it; any other descriptive characteristics from the yarn's listing; pen, pencil.
