Sheep Breeds, Felting, and Socks with Kimberly Langley
About Sheep Breeds, Felting, and Socks with Kimberly Langley
If you want to knit a pair of socks that can be machine washed and wear well and use a natural wool, what breed of sheep would produce the most appropriate wool? Students will be divided into groups and given samples of fiber from different breeds of sheep and be able to experiment with felting the fiber. The instructor will share knowledge of Down, Cheviot and Dorset breeds. There will be swatches for comparison (unwashed, hand washed, machine washed). The class will also discuss the effect of twist and friction on durability of yarns (specifically regarding socks) by comparing yarns with varied amounts of twist. Students will be able to test knit various yarns. Students will receive a mini skein (Suffolk or Cheviot) so they can knit a swatch and create their own washing experiments.
Materials, Equipment, and Supplies the Student Must Bring to Class
Knitting needles appropriate to fingering and dk yarns, usual knitting notions (stitch markers, scissors, etc), stitch holders, paper and pencil for note taking
Materials Fee (to be paid directly to the instructor)
$5 - includes fleece samples for felting from Cheviot and Suffolk breeds, and a breed that felts easily. Students will receive a mini skein (20 - 30 yards) of either Cheviot, Suffolk or Horned Dorset.
