Spinning Short Stapled Fibers with Jill Duarte

About Spinning Short Stapled Fibers with Jill Duarte

Ever wanted to spin short stapled fibers such as luxury down fibers like Cashmere, or short stapled wools? In this workshop, we will address the needs of short stapled fibers when hand spinning, how to setup your spinning wheel for spinning short stapled fibers, a variety of fiber preps (carded rolags/punis, combed top, cloud), spinning techniques (woolen drafting), and yarn structure. We will go over different methods for woolen drafts including point of contact, double drafting and supported long draw. With these skills, students will have the skills necessary to spin any short stapled fibers that may come their way.

Jill Duarte

Jill Duarte spends their days geeking out about all things fiber, diving into the nuances of fiber preparation, color, and the act of spinning. As an instructor, Jill excels in explaining the “Why?” of spinning, whether it’s exploring the relationship between fibers and spinning techniques, the physics of handspinning and the tools we use, or providing insight in how to make something work for you. Jill challenges students to try fibers new to them, explore novel fiber blends and techniques, revisit things they’ve tried before and to step out of their comfort zones in order to expand their horizons.
