About Beginning Drumset: Start Learning the Basics, Even Without a Drumset!
Always wanted to start playing drums? Thought you needed a full kit to get started? This free class will show you how to build a great drumset foundation, even if using nothing more than a practice pad, a pair of sticks, and a chair. Of course, students at any equipment level are welcome to join us!
In this 45-minute session, we'll cover how to properly set up your practice space, develop your first techniques with correct stick grip and posture, learn the basic building blocks of a drumset groove, and understand what you'll need (and what you won't need) to keep progressing at home. You'll leave with a clear roadmap for continuing your drumming journey, whether or not you have access to a full kit.
This class is open to all ages and no prior experience is required.
Class Goals:
1. Understand how to set up an effective practice space with minimal equipment
2. Learn stick grips, layout, and posture from day one
3. Learn stick grips, posture, and how to set up a drumset to fit you
4. Play your first basic drumset grooves
5. Understand how practice pad work translates directly to a full drumset
6. Learn what equipment you actually need (and don't need, especially as a beginner)
7. Leave with a clear, practical next-step plan for continuing to learn
Skill Level: No experience required. This class is designed specifically for complete beginners, including those who have never held a pair of drumsticks. Or, if you've dabbled but never had formal instruction or are looking for a teacher, you're welcome too!
Age Range: All ages welcome. Content is appropriate for pre-teens through adults; younger children are welcome with a parent present.
Materials / What Students Need:
• A chair with a firm, flat seat
• A device with a webcam and reliable internet connection
Optional but recommended:
• A practice pad (any size) OR a firm pillow or mouse pad in a pinch
• A pair of drumsticks (5A or similar recommended for beginners)
How It Works: This is a live, interactive online class hosted on Lessonface. Students connect via computer or tablet. You'll be able to watch, play along, and ask questions in real time.
