We asked 2025 Lessonface Teacher of the Year in Artist Development, Jenessa Castano, to share her perspective on guiding singers and musicians through the artistic journey. In this Q&A, Jenessa discusses her passion for helping artists discover their unique voice, build confidence, and develop a sustainable, individualized path in music. She emphasizes the importance of mindset, self-compassion, consistent practice, and thoughtful goal-setting as essential tools for confident performance and long-term artistic growth.

What drew you to learning about artist development?

Learning what it means to be an Artist is a journey in itself. Not to mention, navigating the steps it takes to cultivate a lifelong study of music. I love helping artists carve out their unique path based on their goals. There is no set in stone path for a performer to follow, as it is unique to each singer or musician. I believe this is what makes the journey exciting and rewarding.

If you could gift your students one piece of automatic knowledge or ability about artist development, what would it be?

Singing and playing an instrument can be a mental game. It is so important to be aware of  your inner dialogue while performing. We have to practice an inner dialogue that is kind to ourselves. Singing can be nerve racking so we have to support ourselves with good thoughts.

What’s one lasting takeaway you hope your students will carry with them from your teaching, even years from now?

I hope that all of the singers I work with understand that their voice is unique, like a fingerprint. That no one in the world has their unique sound. This is because no two people have the exact same anatomy, bone structure, or life experience. Therefore your sound is special and perfect. Taking voice lessons isn't to fix your voice, but to learn how to use your voice to your best ability.

Are there apps / texts / other resources you often recommend?

I highly recommend using the Forscore app. to consolidate all of your sheet music. This has been a game changer for organizing my music digitally.

What’s a skill or idea you’re excited to explore in 2026? How about your students?

My overall goal for my students in the new year is to cultivate confidence performing through, practice, and knowledge of music. The more you know about your music the more confident you'll be. The more you practice the more confident you'll be.

I also plan to teach some of my advanced singers piano in the new year.

Is there anything else you would like to share with potential students about artist development?

Start with small steps consistently, then build on that gradually. Slow and steady wins the race.
