Meet 2025 Teacher of the Year for Bass Guitar Gustavo Martinez

We asked 2025 Lessonface Teacher of the Year in Bass Guitar, Gustavo Martinez, to share insights into his journey as a musician and educator. In this Q&A, Gustavo reflects on discovering the bass guitar at a young age and how it became a lifelong passion, describes how he creates a focused and high-quality online teaching environment, and shares the deeper value he believes music brings to life beyond professional goals. He also discusses the gear and apps he recommends for effective practice and lessons, encourages continuous musical growth, and emphasizes enjoyment and connection as the heart of playing bass.
What drew you to learning the bass guitar?
I was learning saxophone at age 10, when I discovered the electric bass at 12, my life changed forever, and it turned out to be what I will play forever.
How would you describe your teaching studio?
I keep a set up where my students can get the best sound from my bass. At the same time, I keep updated of any new tools that can help in terms of using Zoom and audio settings. Visually, I keep my space (background) without so many distractions, so my students can focus on what we are working on.
What’s one lasting takeaway you hope your students will carry with them from your teaching, even years from now?
I wish my students always remember the importance of playing an instrument, and the impact it has in life, independent of whether they decide to be professional musicians or not. Playing a musical instrument will always open your mind to new things and see things in different ways.
What are some gear items that you wish all your students had?
I wish all my students could have an audio interface with 2 inputs, a microphone and a good pair of headphones, so they can get the best from an online lesson.
Are there apps / texts / other resources you often recommend?
I recommend 2 apps: Pro Metronome and Drumgenius, to practice.
What’s a skill or idea you’re excited to explore in 2026? How about your students?
I wish my students to continue looking for music knowledge and keep improving each day, independent of the style of music they play.
Is there anything else you would like to share with potential students about the bass guitar?
The most important thing is to enjoy when they play bass, the final goal is to make music and have fun. The path is not easy but at the end the results come and you will feel grateful for practicing as much as possible.
