Meet 2025 Teacher of the Year for Metal & Rock Voice Tomy Maz

We asked 2025 Lessonface Teacher of the Year in Rock Voice and Metal Voice, Tomy Maz, to share insights into his work as a vocalist and educator. In this Q&A, he discusses what drew him to extreme vocal styles, how he teaches aggressive sounds in a safe and relaxed way, and why consistency and proper technique are essential. He also highlights student accomplishments from 2025, shares plans for future courses and books, and offers encouragement to vocalists committed to developing their craft.

What drew you to learning the rock and metal voice? Why do you think it is popular (or perhaps should be more popular)?

It is a style of music that I like a lot and there are not many teachers that can explain it correctly and in a safe way. Extreme screams sound epic to me, so I had to figure it out and learn how I could help my students to get those screams relax and safe but still make it sound super aggressive.

What’s one lasting takeaway you hope your students will carry with them from your teaching, even years from now?

We are trying to make the most aggressive scream but with the smallest energy possible. Always being relaxed, in control and safe.

For the kind of sounds that I teach we need time, consistency and practice.

What are some gear items that you wish all your students had? Are there apps / texts / other resources you often recommend?

Really I can adapt to anything, with mic, without mic, lessons on cellphone or computer, at home, on the car. We just need good internet or wifi.

We are using the app Moises that works with AI. To make instrumental versions of the songs, to change the tempo or the key of the song depending on what we need.

Probably we are going to include more AI related things in the lessons to make more use of time and solve tasks that were previously more difficult to accomplish.

Anything you'd like to share about yours or your student’s accomplishments from 2025? Do you have guidance for goal-setting for students of rock and metal voice, or generally?

I'm probably going to make a course in singing and in more extreme sounds.

In 2026 I'm also releasing 2 books, one on clean singing and another one on screams and distortions.

Lots of students released quite a few songs this 2025 so I'm super happy with their accomplishments, helping them in the studio, preparing for live shows and coaching them through their growth.

Is there anything else you would like to share with potential students about rock and metal voice?

Keep on rocking and don't let any buddy tell you you can't do it!!! You need time, practice, training and perseverance.
