SONGWRITING MASTERCLASS WITH NATALIE CRESSMAN

Over the three-sessions we will take a microscopic look into the elements of writing a song. But we will also spend some time discussing the big picture, the way a song can be so inexplicably powerful and carry a clear emotional message. We’ll look at melody, lyrics, harmony, form, and also analyze the work of great, established songwriters. The Ali Ryerson Jazz Flute Master Class, a 4-session online program of intensive jazz flute study, offers a unique opportunity for aspiring and experienced jazz flutists to develop their technical skills and musical reflexes necessary for jazz improvisation. During each hour-long session, Ms. Ryerson will examine a variety of jazz related topics, followed by a live coaching session. The Liz Caplan Voice Technique, developed by Liz Caplan, and taught in this seminar by her long-time associate Karen Dryer, draws upon many diverse disciplines. The innovative use of physical alignment, exercise, and nutrition help to build and maintain a healthy instrument. Yoga, breathing, and relaxation techniques, along with Alexander and Linklater philosophies, are also explored regularly. Vocal exercises, tailored to the individual student, aim to strengthen the larynx and vocal cords as well as releasing the tongue and jaw, yielding increased range and flexibility.
