Introduction to Ableton Playback Engineering: Building a Reliable Live Show System
About Introduction to Ableton Playback Engineering: Building a Reliable Live Show System
Many musicians and technical leaders know they want to use Ableton Live in a live setting, but they are overwhelmed by conflicting information and complicated setups.
This class provides a clear introduction to the essential building blocks of playback engineering.
Students will learn:
- what playback engineering is
- how Ableton Live is used in concerts and live productions
- the purpose of tracks, click, guide, and stems
- how a basic playback session is organized
- what equipment and routing are needed to get started
- the most common mistakes and how to avoid them
The class includes examples from real-world touring and live production environments, while keeping the material approachable for beginners.
By the end of class, students will understand the core structure of a playback system and have a practical roadmap for building their own.
By the end of class, students will be able to:
- explain the role of Ableton playback in a live show
- identify the key components of a playback session
- understand the difference between tracks, click, guide, and stems
- describe the equipment needed for a basic playback setup
- recognize the next steps for building a more advanced system
Ideal for musicians, church teams, MDs, and engineers.
Students do not need Ableton Live installed to attend
This class is taught by a professional playback engineer with real-world experience designing and running playback systems for major artists and large-scale live productions.
Professional credits include work with H.E.R., Charlie Puth, Janelle Monáe, and Teyana Taylor, along with performances and productions for major festivals, award shows, television appearances, and arena-scale events.
The instructor has built and operated playback systems used in live concerts, broadcast performances, and touring environments, and currently provides playback engineering and live production support for churches and performance teams as well.
Rather than teaching theory alone, this class is based on the same practical systems and workflow used in real shows.
This class gives adult learners a practical, uncommon skill that is increasingly valuable in live performance and church environments. It is specialized enough to stand out, while still approachable for complete beginners.
